Siracusa, Sicily

Siracusa is the jewel in Sicily’s crown, and, thanks to strict controls, only really special cars are allowed on the island of Ortygia. Here a bride is delivered to the cathedral, which was originally constructed in the seventh century AD on the site of the fifth century BC Temple of Athena. It is chastening to think for a moment about the two and a half millennia of rituals that have been performed on this site.
