The Costa Concordia, Giglio

The Tuscan island of Giglio has long been one of my favourite places in Italy, and so it was with particular shock that I woke to the news of the wreck of the Costa Concordia on January 14th, 2012. This was a terrible day for Italy; the needless loss of life and the distress caused to victims and families make it one of the worst of peace-time disasters. The only positive things to say about it all, however, are that it could have been much worse, and the salvage operation was handled brilliantly.
