Description

Cosmatesque flooring in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore in Civita Castellana, central Italy. Cosmatesque (or Cosmati) flooring is geometric decorative inlay stonework typical of the architecture of Medieval Italy, and especially of Rome and its surroundings, where the Cosmati family specialised in it in the 13th century. It is derived from that of the Byzantine Empire but is also found in Westminster Abbey.
